Introduction to an "Outdoorsy Netflixer"

My name is Tim, and I am a senior at the University of Oklahoma. I am majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering. The coolest part about my major is that I can pretty much work in any industry. As long as there is a process that can be improved, I can work in the industry. I like to watch Netflix...and currently just started Lost. My summers are pretty busy with having internships each of the previous three summers. My family tries to get a vacation in each summer, but if not, we can spend a weekend out at the lake. Although I find myself watching a lot of TV, I also love to be outdoors. In the past year, I have hiked Enchanted Rock in Texas and Turner Falls in Oklahoma, as well as, spent numerous weekends out at Lake Cypress Springs in Texas. I have no post-graduation plans, but I would like to be back in Dallas (where I am from). Growing up, I loved sports. I played basketball from the time I could walk until I graduated high school. I had the tough choice between continuing my basketball career in college, or focusing on life after basketball. Although I miss organized basketball, I do not regret choosing my life after basketball. I like to make some time to play up at the Huff here at OU. My favorite food is anything with cheese (like pizza). I love to eat cheese plain and eat things with cheese on it. It may be a little weird but cheese is just my thing, I guess. Lastly, but definitely most importantly, Harry Potter is the greatest book series/movie series/everything in the world, and I am ready to debate anyone who says otherwise. I have read each book multiple times and seen each movie a countless number of times. Harry Potter weekend on ABC Family meant I was going to be inside by the TV all day.

  1. Hi Tim,

I love watching Netflix in my free time. I actually just started Lost just a few weeks ago! I am from the Dallas area as well, so I would like to move back there after I graduate in December.

Side note: I LOVE PIZZA. And Harry potter. I always look forward to Harry Potter weekend on ABC Family, especially in the fall/winter time.

  2. Hey Tim,

I can really relate to your self-proclaimed title as an outdoorsy netflixer. As for lost, I can sense some very heated discussion about the show from the two of us. Lost was my religion during high school.

I was able to go hiking in New jersey and in Montreal this past summer and I loved it but I have yet to explore Turner Falls. But it sounds like it'll have to be next on my list!

  4. As you can guess, these classes have gotten such a big boost from all the Harry Potter energy in the world, Tim! Even the Indian Epics class (because of the Patil sisters!). So maybe you will want to somehow weave Harry Potter into a project this semester: J. K. Rowling borrowed very freely from the mythological and legendary traditions of the world, much like what you will be doing for this class too. So think about that as you explore, and see if the themes of magic and sorcery, supernatural beasts, etc. are topics you might want to explore for this class too! There are so many possibilities... especially in Fall semester with Halloween coming up! That's always a good excuse for stories about magic and the supernatural, with or without pumpkin juice. And hey, this class is all about mash-ups: maybe you could invent a Harry-Potter-themed pizza parlor for Diagon Alley! I'm not sure what kinds of weird pizzas they might invent, but it would be fun to imagine. :-)

  5. Hello Tim!
Wow, Industrial and Systems Engineering.. I've never heard of that before. It sounds really tough, but also seems like a very smart career choice, especially if you can work in any industry.
What are some of your favorite Netflix shows? I'm a Netflix fiend myself, and find myself spending quite possibly too much time watching it.
I also used to play basketball, but haven't played in several years. People always ask me if I play though, considering I'm a 5'10 female, ha! I did enjoy playing and regret not playing throughout high school.
And I agree, Harry Potter is awesome.

  6. Tim, it's nice to meet you. It's neat to meet a fellow engineer and outdoorsman. I am also a fan of Turner falls as it is a beautiful place. In addition, I liked to go hiking down in the wichita mountains when school work allows it. In addition, I would say I'm also a Netflix junkie, however who isn't at this point. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more of your posts.

  7. Hi Tim!

Holy cow your major sounds intense. One of my friends is that major, too! He actually just finished an internship this summer with AT&T in Dallas.
That is awesome you can work in any industry! I’m from Flower Mound, so DFW. I think I want to move back there after graduating too. Also did you watch Harry Potter weekend last weekend!? It’s the best ever.

  8. Hi Timothy, it is a nice major you have there, I would say that being a Petroleum Engineer, we are not very far from each other. I am also a big fan of Netflix and Pizza as well, after all when you are a netflixer, you can't not enjoy eating... Moreover, I am a Harry Potter fan myself although I just watched the movies. Thanks for sharing and will look forward to your posts.

  9. Hello Tim, nice to meet you. I am also a senior at the University of Oklahoma. I am a political science major. I know it sounds boring, but it's my thing. I also absolutely love pizza and Netflix. I am not much of a series watcher, but I love to watch movies. I was never any good at basketball, but I am only five foot tall. I am what they call vertically challenged. You were smart to pick a career that allows you a lot of options. I hope you find a career that allows you to move home. Home is the best place on earth. I am looking forward to reading your writing throughout the semester.

  10. Hello Tim! I also love love love organized basketball and played from five through high school. When I went to college I actually ended up playing volleyball for a couple a years instead of basketball because of the time constraints and length of the seasons. It was a pretty tough choice for me, although it really rocketed my love of volleyball. I am also a huge Harry Potter fan and reread the series about once a year to keep them fresh in my mind.

  11. Wow Tim! That is a big title to claim in front of such a large audience.
I love that you have an obsession with cheese and are strong enough to admit it. I, also, love cheese, but am unfortunately lactose intolerant and cannot consume it in large amounts :(
Lastly, you should shoot for the stars and try to join a professional basketball team,

  12. Nice to meet you Tim! I watched Lost a few years ago and it was pretty good. I enjoyed it a lot. I have to agree with you that Harry Potter is pretty awesome. I love watching the movies and will probably never get tired of them. I have yet to have a complete movie marathon though, I do need to make that happen though. I’m completely opposite on the whole cheese thing though. I mean I like cheese, but only in moderation. Well I hope you enjoy the class!

  13. Hey Tim,

It's cool to see that you're so passionate about a variety things, ranging from basketball to hiking to Harry Potter! I'm curious to know what you find so great about that series. A lot of people like it, but there are also a lot of Lord of the Rings fans who swear by the books. What sets Harry Potter apart?

Anyway, best of luck to you in the future!

  14. Hi Tim!

I love that you enjoy the outdoors, I myself enjoy hiking, camping, and backpacking. If you get the chance you should go camp in Devil's Den Arkansas for a weekend, it's a great getaway and it's not too far from Norman.

Also, I am a big fan of cheese. Looking forward to reading your stories.

  15. Hi Tim, so nice to meet you! Cheese rocks for sure!! Also Harry Potter is amazing and every weekend should be Harry Potter weekend. My roommate's family lives near Enchanted Rock and is always bugging us about going down there to hike it. I agree with Hannah Stephen's comment above...your dreams are never too big! You just gotta get ya head in the game and you can do it!!
